Construction Recap: Part 4
Life in Vermont during Construction
The last six months of nearly constant bakery and house construction have been so hard, but there have been many wonderful moments that kept us going. Here are a few glimpses of the best parts of our lives as soon-to-be bakery owners in Vermont.
A recurring experience for us as new homeowners was things falling apart. Here is Mauricio immediately after discovering that the wheelbarrow left for us by the previous owners wasn’t as dependable as he thought! The sellers of our house were beyond generous in setting us up for success, but there were a few things left for us which had been subjected to the passage of time. The funniest one was this red wheelbarrow, which, as William Carlos Williams knows, so much depends upon. Thankfully, there’s a great hardware store just down the road from our house, and we found a replacement in no time.
This photo is from the glorious moment when we finally emptied the last bit of bakery equipment out of our storage unit. So much of our progress was so slow that we really appreciated the big breakthrough moments, and this was one of the most meaningful. When we first moved our equipment into this storage unit, we hadn’t even begun looking at houses and had no idea where we would even end up. It was a leap of faith that paid off, and thinking about how far we’ve come towards our vision of a Vermont bakery was the sweetest part of closing the storage unit door for the last time.
Vermont is full of hidden treasures, and stumbling upon this hidden message made me smile. Viva Mexico!
The best part of living in Vermont is the incredible scenery. This is a picture I took of one of our first snow experiences up here. The snowflakes were so big and fluffy in this one, but as we’ve learned, there are so many different kinds of snow! Regardless of if the flakes are big or tiny, matte or sparkly, they make for a beautiful scene, especially when they dust the mountaintops in white.
Despite the challenges we’ve faced, we are so excited to begin our next chapter as bakers in the incredible state of Vermont. Let’s raise a maple creemee to that!
