A New Home
For The Bakery and For Us
After a long month of packing, cleaning, moving, cleaning, and unpacking, we finally have a new place to call home. It’s a historic 125-year-old farmhouse just south of Montpelier in Vermont, and it’s full of character and history. We’ve been hard at work turning it from a house into a home, and even though the house itself is not really related to full-inclusion baking or many of the other topics we usually discuss here, we thought you might enjoy seeing just a few pictures of our progress.
A home must come before a bakery, but believe me, bakery updates will be coming soon! We’re resuming our weekly blog posts here on Tuesdays, and we’ll have much to share with you in the coming weeks. The recipes and corresponding paid subscriptions are on pause for one more month and will resume September 15th. As much fun as we’ve been having on this adventure, we miss baking and are excited to get back to it once we actually have a functional kitchen!
If you, like us, are lucky enough to call Vermont home, you may have seen this fantastic article about our arrival in the Vermont Seven Days. This has been just one of many welcoming gestures from our new community here, and we are so appreciative of and touched by the warm welcome we’ve received. As the article states, we’ll be selling limited a selection of conchas, cookies, snacking cakes, and more at the Chelsea Farmers Market for the last six weeks of their season, beginning on August 29th. We hope to see you there!
The first thing we did, before we even moved in, was to rip out all the old carpet in the house. The former owners had some really cute dogs, but as much as we love animals, I’m unfortunately very allergic. Ripping out the carpet made a huge difference, but we discovered that the subflooring in a few rooms was never sealed, meaning the dog smell was still a problem. So, we ripped that out too! In the master bedroom, we uncovered these beautiful old wooden planks. There are some massive cracks between them, and we’ll need to lay a new floor down before the room is usable, but until then, we’re enjoying seeing the history of the house in this unique way.
We removed the wooden board on the kitchen walls to uncover beautiful old tiles! This was the moment just before we found them. We’ll paint the bare wall you see there and put the fridge in front of it to cover it up. I love this picture of Mauricio hard at work.
This we did not attempt ourselves! The layout of the house needed some work to serve our family, so we hired some professionals to turn the staircase around. What a job! The workers found the original plaster and lath on the side walls, and we saved a really cool handmade nail as a memento. Soon I’ll be able to share pictures of the finished staircase. More to come next week!
